Terrence Deacon is Associate Professor of Biological Anthropology at Boston University.
Professor Deacon is interested in studies of evolution and its relationship to the development of the human brain and mind. He has focused particularly on understanding the evolutionary origins of human language.
His research has also involved the study of cross–species transplantation of embryonic brain tissue to study evolutionary and developmental brain differences. Among the implications of his research are cell replacement therapies for the treatment of human brain disorders.
Prior to 1992, Prof. Deacon taught at Harvard University for eight years.
Professor Deacon is author of the book, The Symbolic Species.
