Sunil Raina
Prof (Dr) Sunil Raina is the Professor & Head, Department of Community Medicine at Dr. RP Government Medical College, Tanda (Himachal Pradesh), India. He is also the Director of the Centre for Advancing Tobacco Control in Himachal Pradesh (CATCH) and adjunct Professor for Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Karnataka, India.
Dr. Raina completed his MD in Community Medicine in 2005 and worked in academic position as well carried out clinical practice till 2009. Since then Dr. Raina continues to work in academic position only after leaving clinical practice, becoming a full time professor in 2019. His work mainly focuses on public health, epidemiology and primary care.
Dr. Raina was a member Government of India panel on High Altitude Medicine and expert member C- 20 panel of G-20 Summit which was chaired by India in the year 2023. He is expert advisor to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)-Centre for Non Communicable diseases Kolkata, India and Member Scientific Advisory Committee, National Institute of Implementation Research (ICMR-NIIRNCD), Government of India. Besides being external reviewer for proposals submitted for funding to ICMR and the Department of Health Research, Government of India, he is also an external reviewer for Research Grant Council Hongkong.
Dr. Raina is an expert member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) a constitutional body of the Government of India, tasked with recruiting officers for All India Services and the Central Civil Services through various standardized examinations. He is an observer with the National Medical Commission (NMC), a statutory body in India that regulates medical education, medical professionals, institutes, and research.
Dr. Sunil Raina has been and continues to be involved with Forty five (45) funded research projects and has more than three hundred and fifty (350) research publications in peer reviewed national and international journals to his credit.
He has appeared in more than 150 television interviews on national and international broadcasting channels expressing his views related to public health issues. He was actively involved in providing advice to various stakeholders (Government and Non-Government) on Covid-19 pandemic.
He is the national convener for Organized Medicine Academic Guild (OMAG) - a confederation of 15 health associations in India as also expert advisor to World Health Network- a multidisciplinary group of top international Scientists.
He delivered the “Harcharan Singh Oration” for the year 2021-22, one of the highest awards of public health in India.
