We are saddened to report the passing of Richard Cooper on December 23 from cancer. Dick was co-faculty and long time member of the NECSI Board of Directors. Dick’s clarity and deep insights into economic fundamentals, international economics and national relations have enriched our understanding and greatly informed our research. He could see directly through complicated mathematical analyses to their essence, appreciating their important points and guiding their expression. He would not tolerate directions of inquiry, even entire literatures, that could not be applied in the real world. We greatly appreciate his guidance and devotion to enabling our contributions. His friendship will be missed.
Dick was the Maurits C. Boas Professor of International Economics at Harvard University, previously academic roles included Provost, Frank Altschul Professor of International Economics at Yale University. His contributions included serving in multiple government advisory roles: Chairman of the National Intelligence Council, Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, Under-Secretary of State for Economic Affairs and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Monetary Affairs for the U.S. Department of State, and Senior staff economist on the Council of Economic Advisers.
