Program Overview

The NECSI Fellows Program provides an opportunity for postdoctoral and graduate students to join in complex systems research activities and publications, working directly with NECSI researchers. NECSI Fellows remain in residence at their home institutions and receive financial support for travel to NECSI to participate in special programs and research. Collaborations continue year round.

NECSI Postdoc and Student Fellows participate in:

  • educational programs at NECSI in selected areas of advanced studies of the approach and methods of complex systems science;

  • research activities and publications of NECSI through collaboration and mentoring by NECSI faculty and postdocs; and

  • special programs for NECSI Fellows.

Fellows are appointed for a three- to five-year term.


NECSI accepts applications from outstanding postdocs and students who are interested in contributing to the advancement of complex systems science and its application to professional contexts and social concerns. Applicants must:

  • have demonstrated outstanding intellectual capabilities;

  • be driven by a desire to contribute, and a concern for the improvement of society;

  • have a demonstrated ability to converse and write effectively; and

  • have the ability to contribute at the leading edge of research, or in its application to professional or social concerns.

Application Forms and Instructions

The following items must be submitted by the application deadline of December 1.

  • A completed application form, signed by the applicant's supervisor at their home institution.

  • A copy of undergraduate and graduate transcripts (unofficial electronic versions are fine).

  • A current CV.

  • One writing sample (i.e. published or unpublished paper).

  • Two letters of recommendation.
