Complex systems landscapes - the enterprise in a socio-economic context

Abstract
String theorists are attempting to describe the universe(s) in a 10-dimensional descriptive and highly speculative "landscape". The Enterprise, operating in a complex socio-economic environment, has at least the same dimensionality and is a concrete example of a very complex system whose “landscape” is of more practical, though perhaps less elegant, interest. For purposes of this paper, the enterprise is defined as a significant mission/business undertaking involving multiple operating agents, stakeholders, and technologies.

There are an abundance of approaches to the analysis of the Enterprise, many of which involve specific disciplines and methods applied to elements of the enterprise. This paper describes a comprehensive set of important dimensions of the enterprise and its socio-economic environment. These are presented as views of the overall enterprise "landscape" at multiple scales including:
- Socio-economic views including inter-industry relationships in a global economy, and consumer behaviors
- Enterprise management perspectives including levels of order and chaos, rules, heuristics and social interactions
- Decision perspectives including sense, orient, negotiate, adapt, and respond activities important to performance
- Information views including scope, content, value, and velocity relationships
- Acquisition perspectives to apply new technologies via systems and services to improve enterprise effectiveness.

Descriptive models are generally a necessary precedent to predictive models. Analysis of the above subset of landscape views reveals the opportunity for a federation of multi-disciplinary models and analytical methods, mostly descriptive but some predictive, that are applicable to this instance of a very complex system-of-systems.
