Audio/visual equipment

Please notify us of your requirements for audio visual equipment. Overhead projectors, computer projectors, and slide projectors are available (but please let us know about the need for slide projectors). Give us sufficient notice. Please direct A/V requests to Debra at debra@necsi.org no later than April 30.

Time estimates of talks

Parallel Sessions: 14-18 minutes, depending on the session
Extended Talk Sessions: 18-22 minutes, depending on the session
Breakout Sessions: 26-32 minutes, depending on the session
Plenary Sessions: 40 minutes

Speaker guidelines

Attached are some general guidelines for speakers. Of course, the guidelines cannot be uniformly applied.

The conference is devoted to investigating the unified study of complex systems. However, most speakers and attendees are presently based primarily in a particular discipline and therefore communicating the frame of the work is particularly important. Moreover, the frame often contains many of the universal aspects.

(1) The first part of the presentation should be devoted to: (a) explaining the questions that are being asked / issues being addressed (b) the key insights that have been gained.

(a) and (b) are designed to communicate the way of understanding systems that are being used.

(2) The second part should describe examples that provide a sense of the detailed work. Preferably, this should resonate with the questions and insights described in (1) and provide further understanding of how and what we learn about complex systems. Introduce technical methodology / mathematical tools sparingly, but give a sense of these so that the basis of the conclusions can be appreciated.

We may produce a video proceedings of the conference. Please let us know now if you do not want to be included.

Poster presenter guidelines

Please note that posters are up all week at ICCS. They provide an important opportunity for people to think about your work and discuss it, which is not as possible during your oral presentations. We can accommodate additional posters from those who are scheduled to give oral presentations and this is encouraged. Please inform us if you plan to prepare a poster so that a space may be reserved for you.

The poster space will be 3 feet wide (1 meter) by 4 to 5 feet long (1.5 meter). Materials for attaching the posters will be provided.

For those unfamiliar with posters -- it is advised to have an easily viewed title and abstract with large characters. As with any presentation, figures with clear captions are typically better than large amounts of text. The material may be printed on single sheets of paper and attached directly to the poster space. Copies of preprints/reprints can be made available at the poster.

Plenary/breakout session chairs

At the beginning of your session you will have 10 minutes to introduce the central concept of your session and its relationship to the study of complex systems in general. This is an opportunity to set the tone and spirit of the session. We cannot emphasize too much the importance of this task to the overall success of the conference.

If you have not yet sent a paragraph describing the subject area of the breakout session please do so as soon as possible.

The conference is devoted to revealing the unified study of complex systems. However, most speakers and attendees are based primarily in a particular discipline and therefore communicating the frame of the work is particularly important.

Therefore, at the beginning of your session please devote a few minutes to introducing the session by: (a) explaining the questions that are being asked / issues being addressed (b) the key insights that have been gained in general by this approach (not necessarily by the specific speakers of the session)

(a) and (b) are designed to reflect the way of understanding systems that are being used. If possible, communicate your remarks directly to the speakers in advance so that the descriptions of their work can better resonate with the questions and insights described above.

Please be in touch with the speakers of your session to discuss with them the format -- i.e. length of talks and discussion format.

(white shuttle with green "A&A Transportation" lettering)
